In what has been a challenging year for organisations the world over, I am proud to say that in 2009 we have, once again, delivered outstanding work around the world for clients in both the public and the private sectors.
We worked at the very heart of our clients’ organisations to deliver programmes that were fundamental to their success. Our clients tell me that they value our focus on excellence and innovation, and that we are their firm of choice for handling large, critical, complex projects.
Leading industry thinking on the economy
Our work with clients across all sectors, together with our own detailed analysis, gave us a strong insight into the economic situation this year. We are seeing signs of resilience in some sectors, such as healthcare and energy, as well as in the organisations that are shaping the new low-carbon economy. Other businesses and public sector organisations in many countries are facing more significant challenges.
In our book The Zombie Economy: Leadership in Times of Uncertainty, which we published in late 2009, we argued that the crisis has created a semi-permanent change in four key economic groups – banks, governments, consumers and companies – which means that business as usual is a distant prospect, and that when recovery does come, it will look and feel very different to what we have experienced before.
PA has real strength in the types of work required in such an environment: cost reduction, operational improvement, innovation and product development, examples of which you can see throughout this report. We are advising our clients to ensure liquidity, remove ‘passengers’ and remodel their organisations to ensure they can perform strongly in the post-crisis world.
