Developing the healthcare of the future

The future of healthcare lies in using information to create more personalised care. This can then increase access, drive up quality and control costs more.

For many years, the trends in healthcare have looked unsustainable. Ageing populations mean more people need care, while a declining workforce means fewer people to pay for, and actually deliver, that care.

At the same time, there has been an inexorable rise in the costs of care as a result of increases in the number of long-term conditions and from advances in medicine.

Up to now it has been possible to absorb these costs incrementally. However, that has meant that either a significant proportion of the population loses access to care for all but emergency procedures, or access to treatments is rationed.

There is now a growing political will across the world to address some fundamental issues in healthcare, with a recognition that the solution lies in far reaching reforms that will fundamentally change the relationships between key factors.
