British Sugar – developing and implementing customer driven supply as well as improving sales and operations planning

A rapid performance improvement was required in customer service and throughput at the new DC to absorb work from two others to enable their closure within ten weeks. PA applied a Customer Driven Supply (CDS) approach to drive improvement – an approach which turns the supply chain from concentrating on cost reduction into becoming a flexible and responsive, service oriented commercial competitive edge. Within ten weeks, a 29% increase in throughput was achieved and customer service levels rose from 71% to 93%. Work was also transferred from two other sites that were subsequently closed. Over the same period, service-related customer complaints fell by 91%.

Additionally, the client made progress in implementing S&OP but it was not enabling decision making based upon prioritised issues and options. S&OP was highly reliant upon the effective interpretation of data downloaded from multiple business systems. The client wanted to make quick, practical changes to improve the effectiveness of the S&OP process and improve the timeliness, quality and to protect the integrity of decision making with more robust processes and systems. PA supported the design and implementation of key enablers to improve supply chain management, optimise service levels and manage costs:

  • Reconciliation between Demand and Supply Plans and Management Business Review, completing the S&OP process and enabling supply capabilities to be matched more closely with demand creation activities

  • Supply chain systems specification for automated forecasting software, planning and factory scheduling software

  • Improved factory scheduling process, enabling more effective translation of plans into schedules

  • 37% increase in stock system uptime due to rescheduled system downtime.
