Metropolitan Police Service – driving reductions in fleet costs and carbon dioxide emissions

The largest police fleet in the UK, run by the Metropolitan Police Service, recently recognised the need to minimise the overall whole-life costs and environmental impact of its 5,000 marked and unmarked vehicles (comprising a wide diversity of different models including motorbikes, vans, cars and armoured vehicles) – all the while still meeting its public commitments.

PA Consulting Group worked closely with the police force to develop the Vehicle Fleet Optimiser (VFO). This strategic planning tool determines the optimal vehicle replacement schedule, by taking into account all the financial and practical constraints of each type and role of vehicle, to minimise overall costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

• Early indications show that the VFO has helped police fleet managers to identify in the area of 5-10% in annual vehicle costs

• Police fleet managers are now able to determine their optimal replacement policies while taking into account an array of constraints such as annual budgets, the time to equip vehicles, the number of vehicles that can be introduced in any timescale and options for which models can be used as replacements

• The fleet department can set carbon dioxide emissions targets and to create a replacement strategy minimising these emissions.
