Protecting against negative impacts and gaining competitive advantage

BUSINESS CONTINUITY MANAGEMENT

Business continuity management (BCM) offers not only protection against negative impacts of an incident, but also the opportunity to gain a competitive edge.

In an increasingly complex and interdependent operating environment, business continuity arrangements must be comprehensive and flexible, so that they are readily adaptable to any incident or crisis. Furthermore, they should be regularly communicated across the workforce, exercised and re-evaluated. This will enable an organisation to return to ‘business as usual’ in the quickest possible time.

However, even under normal operating conditions, companies can derive advantage from BCM. Not only does BCM ensure faster recovery from shocks and interruptions, it also generates greater value for an organisation and its stakeholders.

In today’s interconnected world, a successful organisation must have the flexibility, awareness, resources and market tolerance to cope with the unexpected.

Integrating people, process and technology

PA Consulting Group’s (PA’s) approach to BCM comprises three key steps:

  • Research, analyse and quantify potential types of business interruption

  • Determine the level of resilience required, and identify crisis management and recovery objectives

  • Develop, test and maintain flexible strategies and plans for realistic responses that are adaptable to a range of disruptive challenges.

The results of this work also enable organisations to better understand and improve organisational efficiency.

Our approach integrates people, process and technological aspects to achieve reliable outcomes. Together with our clients, we:

  • Ensure employees are aware of risks and the importance of preparedness, define roles for emergency response and train selected individuals in crisis management through simulations

  • Identify the mission-critical processes that determine the options for recovery and define actions to achieve it in the shortest time possible

  • Select the appropriate technology to facilitate communications, provide timely information for decisions, support remote working and accelerate recovery.
