UK government pledges funding for sustainable transport projects

Local authorities are to receive an unprecedented funding boost from the government to be put towards sustainable transport projects.

The Department for Transport has announced that £560 million will be made available in total, with the aim of the scheme being to create economic growth, while lowering carbon emissions. In addition, the government is looking to cut the red tape encountered by councils in the sector and to give local people more power to initiate transport schemes in the area where they live so as to better meet residents' needs.

Along with the £560 million Local Sustainable Transport Fund, the government has voiced its commitment to work alongside the sector in developing e-purses and other technology related to smart ticketing. It will also simplify the regulations for introducing new road signs and allow local councils to decide on road classifications, without first going through central government.

Last week, rail minister Theresa Villiers announced plans to set tough objectives for train operators, but added that they would be given more flexibility on how to deliver these outcomes.

Charlie Henderson, PA Consulting Group’s transport expert comments: "Since the emergency Budget in June 2010, local authorities in the UK have been seeking to rationalise their spending.  Local transport, along with many other areas, has been hit hard.  So the recent announcement of additional funding to local authorities for transport projects is welcome news.

The funding aimed at sustainable transport projects, has the potential to stimulate significant economic growth.  Clearly there will be the direct economic and social benefit of additional expenditure.  But these funds will also enhance the UK's capabilities in the sustainable transport sector, a sector that is growing rapidly.

In the light of spiralling fuel prices, this type of targeted funding initiative makes sense - sustainability is a key issue.  The challenge to local authorities is to convert this expenditure into tangible benefits for the travelling public and develop local businesses who can contribute to sustainable transport propositions. This requires both an understanding of transport, innovation and the commercialisation process.”
